Why Weed Titles on Presidential Elections and U.S. Presidents?
During the month of November, educators can seize upon our shared national excitement and develop innovative lessons on the electoral process, the presidency, and a multitude of related topics. The time is ripe for explaining primaries and caucuses. Review and evaluate campaign ads and political cartoons, explore the history of the White House, and watch the presidential inauguration in real time. Criteria for Weeding Titles on Presidential Elections and U.S. Presidents
- Check the 300s (the 329s for older titles-although the number is now unassigned, the 324s for titles on U.S. political parties and the election process, and the 352s for titles on the office of the president), check the 973s for titles offering an historical approach to the presidency and presidents.
- When evaluating materials that include information on elections, be mindful to eliminate titles that favor one party over another. Titles should present information in a balanced and non-biased manner.
- Review primary source materials and weed items that demonstrate impartial views on controversial issues.
- Weed titles that are misleading in explaining present issues and imply currency.
- If a title is an examination of all presidents, it must be current.
- As our perception of history evolves, be sure titles reflect modern perceptions of individual presidents.
- Weed materials that rarely circulate using the circulation statistics. However, be careful not to dispose of titles that contain valuable material. An item's circulation history is not always an accurate measure of the item's use. Students may use these titles to glean specific slices of information rather than as take-home reads.
- Titles should be free of gender and racial stereotypes.
- Weed materials that are worn, checking for:
- Soiled pages
- Brittle, yellowed paper
- Missing pages
- Worn edges or corners
- Broken spine
- Dirty cover
